The first census in 1951 recorded an overall literacy rate of India as 18.33%. that means nearly 82% of our population was illiterate. Female literacy was estimated to be around 8%. Literacy rates varied significantly by regions. Rural and tribal literacy watch for below the national average. It was massive challenge before the government to establish a schooling system. Different SSC boards, CBSE and many text books, boards were established. It took some time for system to become sturdy. Many Indian and foreign researchers work to make our education better. Hats all of the efforts taken by the government.
